Work through the extract and describe the mise en scene.

·         The main female character’s costume is like of a military uniform; very suited and dull. Her makeup is very light and her hair is tie back. Similarly to the female maids they are dressed in uniform very simple and plain like of a typical maid dress and their make-up is very light and their hair is tie back.

·         The guards’ body language  is very bold where they are standing apart with the feet and
·         The props in the scene are gadget and guns
·         Analysing the lighting I found out the lighting used on the female characters tend to be a high key lighting.
·         The setting of the scene seems to be set in a space science lab; from analysing the props around where they are huge machines which connotes it’s a science laboratory as huge machines tend to be in science labs and the silver walls connotes space.
·         In the scene the woman in red positioned in the background and the doctor is positioned in front.

Explain how the mise en scene constructs representations of gender?

·         What Martha is wearing and how her makeup is did in this scene challenges the stereotypical of blondes whereas reinforcing the stereotypical of blondes. Where their costume tends to show off their body and their makeup is heavy and hair is let out.
·         The positioning used in the scene reinforces the authority males have other females. Where the Martha is kneeing at the bottom of the stairs and the doctor is standing on top of the stairs. This empathises the power the doctor has over Martha and reinforces the way the media tend to represents females as being the victim; vulnerable; having less power and men being in control and having authority.
·         The red dress reinforces the stereotypy of females seen as sexual. As the red girls connotes passion and lust in this term.
Work through he extract and describe the camera work

·         At the beginning of the scene the use of low angle is used a lot of the doctor and the use of a high angle is used a lot on Martha.
·         The slow panning is used during the part where Martha is having a group discussion with everyone.
Explain how the camera work constructs representations of gender?

·         The use of low angle shots on the doctor empathise the representation of men being in control and having authority as the low angle shot creates an effect that makes the doctor look high and in control.
Identify sound

·         The use of voice over is used when Martha goes over her flashback allows the audience to see the inside of Martha’s head which helps us to emphasise with her.
·         The use of the non-diegetic sound at the beginning-drum beats sound.
·         Silence is seen in this scene, the woman in red does not speak till the end of the scene.
·         The use synchronous sound is seen when the gadget slides off the doctor’s hand to the ground.  We hear the sliding squealing sound.
·         The use of the parallel sound; the up beating sound emphasises Martha’s authority is slowing rising growing and the villain is losing power and being defeating slowing.
·         In the dialogue between the villain and Martha, Martha laughs to cut the Villain off.
Explain how sound constructs the representation of gender
·         The use of the non-diegetic sound at the beginning-drum beats sound, when Martha almost  intimated her reinforcing the way female are represented in the media as intimated and weak.
·         The use of silence used on the woman in red almost say she does not have that much authority this empathises and reinforces the way woman are represented in the media as individuals with small authority. Adding to this the woman in red only starts talking at the end of scene when everyone starts talking to again reinforce the way women are represented in the media as dependable individuals.
·         The sliding screeching sound caused by villain almost contrast the way men are represented in the media as usually in power and control.  The squealing sound connotes help and in danger.
·         Laugh tends to connotes power, fear or joy. In this contents laugh connotes power. Where Martha laughs while in dialogue; cutting the villain off shows she’s is control; this challenges the way women are represented in the media as vulnerable and with small power.

·         Cross cutting is used in the scene when Martha tells us her story and used in the laboratory scene.
·         The editing pace changes, at the beginning of the scene the pace starts off slow and smooth as feminine though starts to speed up and go fast as masculine.
·
Explain how editing constructs the representation of gender
·         The use of shot reverse has been used with Martha and the villain doctor where the male has a longer time shot during the shot reverse to emphasises that he is more dominant than her which reinforces the way male are represented in the media with authority and power.

·         The use of eye line match used the male villain emphasises he has the most authority in the room and reinforces the way males are represented in the media as having the most power.
·         The action match is used a lot on the male villain to illustrate his importance which reinforces the way media the male are stereotype in the media; usually as the main character and important.
·         Cross cutting is used in the scene when Martha tells us her story and used in the laboratory scene where she is seen as the messenger to emphasises her status being just a messenger which reinforces the way female are represented in the media with a common status.
·         The even editing pace ; fast and slow, fast being very masculine and slow and smooth being very feminine almost reinforces that males and females’ equal rights which challenges the way males and females are stereotype with different status where females has a low status and males has a high status.
